PTFCA Indoor State Championship:  It was a spectacular end to one of the most successful indoor seasons in the history of Downingtown East on Saturday at the PTFCA State Championship at Penn State University.  There were six medals, four school records, one state meet record, and a seventh place team finish by the end of the day.  Starting off the day in the 60 Hurdles was Austin Woodford, who tied his school record of 8.50 in the first race and advanced to the prelims where he ran a 8.55 and finished in thirteenth overall.  Marie Thompson took the track next and ran a smart race to finish second by .12 seconds in a new school record of 5:04.38.  Rachel Hunte continued the momentum in her open 400, winning her heat and finishing sixth overall against very strong competition in 58.44, which breaks Sami Keenan's school record from 2004!  Junior Nick Ferry also ran very well in his 400, as he won his heat in a new school record of 51.23.

The young girls 4x200 of Carly Long, Alyssa Long, Ashley Hamilton, and Lynsey Steffy ran a season best in the event and finished twentieth in the state.  The guys 4x800 of Nick Ferry, Kyle Brown, Nick Dastalfo, and Chris Glaug also ran a season best of 8:13 thanks to great splits by Dastalfo and Glaug.  One of the most anticipated events of the day was the girls DMR, and the squad of Ashley Fornshell, Rachel Hunte, Taylor Carcella, and Marie Thompson did not disappoint.  Thanks to a fantastic leadoff leg by Fornshell, another stellar 400 by Hunte, a strong 800 by freshman Carcella, and a solid anchor leg by Thompson, the girls won the event by over seven seconds in 12:13.62 while smashing the state meet record by over nine seconds.  They set a new school record and recorded the first state championship in the history of Downingtown East Track and Field as well as launching themselves up the national charts to a US#14 ranking.  Both the girls and guys 4x400's closed out the day in solid fashion and wrapped up a phenomenal season.  A huge thank you to the coaches for helping the team continually become the best they can be and to our fabulous chaperones for everything they do for the team!

Results are up and everything is updated!  Pictures will be coming in the next few days.

TFCAGP Last Chance Meet:  Jesse Owens once said, "One chance is all you need" and East definitely proved that statement this morning at the TFCAGP Last Chance Meet!  In the 60 Hurdles, senior Austin Woodford continued to roll, placing fourth overall in the event in 8.53.  Junior Nick Ferry ran away from the competition in the open 400 - not only did he place second overall, but he qualified for states and lowered his own school record to 52.14!!  Because of the girls meet cancellation due to weather, the girls 4x200 traveled to the boys meet in hopes of qualifying for states.  The squad of Ashley Hamilton, Rachel Hunte, Alyssa Long and Carly Long did just that, running with the guys to a time of 1:48.97 and extending their season until next Saturday!  Congratulations everyone!  Results are posted under the guys results, and current leaders and PR's are also updated.

DVGTCA Meet of Champions:  It was a great night all around for the girls team!  The meet started off with a fantastic run by the very young 4x800, whose time of 10:01 was only three seconds away from a state qualifying effort and included two big PR's from Elaina Rogowski and Shannon Casey.  Not to be outdone, the other distance relay, the DMR, held their own against PA #2 Conestoga to place second overall thanks to a great effort by anchor leg Erin Casey.  The other medal from the night came from junior Ali Burkholder, who powered her way through the 3000 to finish sixth in an impressive PR of 11:10.8!  The girls will take the track next against the best in the state at the State Championships on March 1st!  Everything has been updated, and some pictures from the meet have been posted.

TFCAGP Meet of Champions:  At the boys meet on Saturday morning, East proved that they were ready for the upcoming state meet.  Senior Austin Woodford once again took control of the 60 hurdles and finished sixth overall in the finals with a time of 8.78.  There was a phenomenal effort all around from the 4x400 boys, who finished sixth overall with their fastest time this season thanks to a fantastic leadoff leg by Nick Ferry and a strong anchor leg by Kyle Brown.  In the 4x200, it was Ferry again who teamed up with Chris Glaug, John Rupert, and James Ferguson to put down a time that just barely missed the state qualifying mark.  The results, rosters, and current leaders have all been updated.

Mr. Greg Bowen, a long time Pole Vault coach of Downingtown, passed away last Sunday after a long battle with cancer.  A memorial service is being held on December 1st at 2:00 pm at the Goshen Baptist Church in West Chester.  We are establishing a memorial scholarship in his memory, as well as dedicating a bench for him in the Pole Vault area in memory of his work.  Mr. Bowen inspired countless athletes during his decades at Downingtown, and his wisdom and passion will assuredly live on through those he touched.  The team would like to send their condolences to his family, friends, and athletes.
